Tax ALERT: The seven new taxes and fees approved by the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority [a taxing authority created by the Virginia General Assembly in June '07] go into effect on January 1, 2008 in the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William; as well as the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas and Manassas Park. The following is projected to raise $325 m in '09.
- Congestion Relief Fee (Grantor's Tax on home sellers): $.40 cents/per $100 valuation
- Motor Vehicle Rental Tax: 2% of rental rate
- Transient Occupancy Tax: 2% of hotel rate
- Safety Inspection Fee: $10.00 annually
- Sales and Use Tax on Auto Repairs: 5% of labor charges
- Regional Registration Fee: $10.00 annually
- Initial Vehicle Registration Fee: 1% of value (one time)
The same localities now have the authority to enact addition taxes and fees to raise another $100 m per year:
o Commercial Real Estate Fee: up to 25-cents per $100 ($83.5 million in FY09).
o Local Registration Fee: $10 ($17 million in FY09)
o Commercial/Residential Impact Fee (unknown)
